Neighbourhood Dance Works is honored to administer the Roberta Thomas Legacy Award. The Award was established by Roberta (Robbie) Thomas' family in 2012 as a way to continue her infectious human spirit by supporting development and presentation in the field of dance and dance collaboration.
The Roberta Thomas Legacy Award (RTLA) is awarded annually to a dance practitioner or an artist in any discipline collaborating with a dance practitioner. The funds can be used for professional development, aspects of creation, or final production.
This year's RTLA is going to Hilary Knee for "to unwind a seashell".
Hilary Knee is Corner Brook born dance artist, choreographer, and teacher, who studied contemporary dance at The School of Toronto Dance Theatre receiving the Sharon Moore Solo Project award upon graduation in 2016. Since returning to Newfoundland in 2021, Knee joined creative forces with Candice Pike and Josh Murphy, together the trio has performed their show, “Ruralesque”, throughout Atlantic Canada. As a choreographer and solo performer, Hilary continues to expand her repertoire, blending raw physicality with theatrical themes. Some recent collaborations include “Of the Earth; Propelling Forward” with beloved NL musician Geraldine Hollett, and “to unwind a sea shell”, with composer Robert Humber and pianist Stephen Eckert, which premiered at Sound Symposium XXI in St. John’s.
“Thank you, Neighbourhood Dance Works! I am honoured to be receiving the Roberta Thomas Legacy Award. I’m grateful to use this opportunity to work with Lois Brown as dramaturg to refine the choreographic arc of my new work “to unwind a sea shell”. I can’t wait to get to work and elevate this piece to the next level. This time working with and learning from Lois will expand my skills as a dance maker and enrich my choreographic voice.”
